Appleton is a fabulous small town nestled in northeastern Wisconsin near Lake Michigan and at the north end of large Lake Winnebago, home of the unique Winnebago lake fly. In 2004, Appleton was honored for being in the top 10 most secure cities in the United States.
The city of Appleton shares its history with Lawrence University, for the two grew simultaneously. The close relationship established in the early years continues to exist. Appleton is a part of Outagamie County which was created in 1851 by separation from Brown County. The name Outagamie is derived from a Native American word meaning dwellers on either shore or dwellers on the other side of the stream.
Appleton is covered by large and numerous trees in and around the numerous city parks. There is a lively downtown that has diversity and quality in its restaurants. Appleton has a sense of peacefulness in the community and friendliness in the people.
